Jazz for a Hopeful Future: Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk
April 12
Both the United Nations and bebop were platforms that spoke of freedom of ideas, human rights, and hope. The Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble presents a collection of popular jazz tunes performed or composed in 1946, including commentary on their relevance to the first sessions of the United Nation in 1946 London. Featured songs will include bebop pioneer Charlie “Bird” Parker’s compositions “Now’s the Time,” and “Anthropology,” as well as “Epistrophy” by Thelonious Monk.

10:30 PM at the TD Bank Plaza Stage.
JL is bringing together his closest friends from the Fresh Cut from the Vine Ensemble, Lenny Seldman’s answer to the question, what’s next for Jazz in Philadelphia?
Feat. Jason Fraticelli, bass; Anwar Marshall, drums; Mark Allen, bari sax; Tim Conley, guitar.

Details TBA.

The Big Bang, showcasing the massive sounds of two 18 piece bands, covering flavors from Duke Ellington to J Dilla and back.
Catch the debut of Anthony Tidd’s new big-band, PACT. Featuring a host of fresh new compositions and familiar arrangements by Tidd and Tirpak, this line up reads like a who’s-who of Philly Jazz, drawing upon the great talents of Eric Wortham, Kevin Hanson, Leon Jordan, Korey Riker, Matt Cappy, Josh Lawrence and many more.
The Magenta ensemble, a product of the Kimmel Center’s Creative Music Program, will open the night. Do not be deceived—though the drummer may be 12 and the oldest band member 16, these kids hold their own and then some!

As always, we welcome our resident turntablist and recent Redbull Thre3style DJ battle victor, DJ Phsh!
